Being Green
Kermit the Frog definitely had the right attitude. He struggled with the difficulty of being green but after a while he decided that it was “cool and friendly-likeâ€. And I think many people feel this way. At first purchasing eco-friendly products and tackling tasks such as recycling, means you have to make a special effort, but once you know what to do or where to look, then no real special effort is required.
One of the biggest risk factors to our environment, despite the growing awareness of the situation, are plastic bags. Not only do they clog our waterways but they also injure and kill our wildlife and marine life. Clean Up Australia estimates that Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags per year with an estimated 50 million of those ending up as litter on the streets and in the water. In 2006, they prompted a campaign calling on all Australians to say no to the use of plastic bags. Many supermarkets and retailers now offer the option to use reusable bags in addition to plastic bags to try to counteract the problem.
Tote bags are a great way to do your bit for the environment and keeping one in your car for those unannounced shopping trips will also help. Tote bags can be a stylish accessory and they need not be expensive although they can range in price from anywhere between $10 and $200.
“I am green and it’ll do fine, it’s beautiful! And I think it’s what I want to be.†Thanks Kermit, I couldn’t have said it better myself!
